Nokia N900 Review - Read Complete Review on Gadget

Nokia N900 is the mini computer in disguise for it doesn't feel like a phone at all. This smart phone is first device to hold Maemo Operating system which is Linux-based powered by Intel doing away with the ageing Symbian. It comes loaded with all the major features making it a spectacular Internet tablet available. Can this customization gadget survive in the smartphone battle ground?

Design 

Nokia N900 is a Internet tablet of bar shaped with sliding keyboard having phone abilities. This hefty phone comes with huge screen which leaves no space for the physical keys. The dimensions of this well built sturdy phone are 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm with weight of 181 grams. 

On the top of the phone various keys have been arranged from left to right, these include volume key, power button and camera shutter while holding in landscape mode. There is slider lock key on the side with headphone socket below. Just adjacent to the headphone jack there is stylus which is easily removable with the fingernail. Speakers have been put on both left and right side with USB on left side. On the back of the phone camera with sliding lens has fitted quite craftily in the chassis. 


Display

Most striking is the screen which is TFT resistive touchscreen of 3.5 inches with the resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Below the screen, is slide out QWERTY keypad, which gives ease in writing as compared to virtual keyboard. The screen is quite responsive and can be zoomed and out by gesture control. 


Web Browser and Interface

Nokia N900 is operating on Maemo 5 OS powered by ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz . There are four sliding screens for the Home screens giving you ample space to place your favourite icons. Moreover there are shortcuts for RSS feeds,contacts,apps and websites which can also be arranged on the home screen. 

N900 is running with Maemo web browser which consists of demanding Mozilla technology. The web browser is excellent supporting Flash 9.4 Support which allows you to watch any videos from You Tube at fast speed making it enjoyable. Zooming in and out is possible with the volume button or by simple tapping. Sites like Google Doc and Google wave are operational too. 

Internet can be accessed through 3G,GPRS,EDGE and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth and USB are also present together with Infra red. 


Messaging

Nokia N900 supports messaging services like SMS, Push mail and IM with Email getting a special mention. This device supports several Email services like .Mac, AIM, AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo etc. Besides, you can add many email accounts in your device. Sending and creating a Email is not an issue as it is fast and efficient. 


Photos and Videos

The camera of the Nokia N900 is great with 5MP power with the resolution of 2576x1936 pixels providing best picture quality with appropriate balance of colour and contrast. The features present in the phone include Dual LED Flash,Geo- tagging and auto focus. In good light the videos captured are also amazing at 848 x 480)@25fps. With VGA camera you can video chat and even do video conferencing. 


Entertainment

Besides being a Internet tablet, N900 is a complete entertainment package with all the integrations present. You can store immense number of music and video files in the memory which is 32GB internal with expandable memory of 16GB. You can download web videos through You Tube and Hulu. With Flash support there is no dearth to the number of videos you can enjoy on your device. 

N900 supports DVD-resolution videos. Other video formats which can be played include H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263 in .avi, .mp4, .wmv, .asf and .3gp. 

Music player is good and assorts the songs in to various categories of Artist, Songs, Genres or Playlists. The sound quality is also remarkable with 3.5mm jack and loudspeakers. 


Other Applications 

Maps- Nokia N900 comes with Ovi Maps 1.0. There is Google Maps as well for your usage. 

Skype- On setting Skype account making and receiving calls is as simple like normal calls. You can even have access to your contacts on VoIP accounts and instant messenger. 

Facebook- You can establish Facebook Widget on your homescreen, this will show you the status updates of your friends and allow you to share your photos as well. 

Off Apps- Office apps like Word to Go,Sheet to Go and Slide show are all present in the phone along with PDF reader. 


Battery Life

Battery which is Li-Ion 1320 mAh (BL-5J) will run for around 24 hours on a single charge. This means you will be required to charge it everyday. It gives talk time of 6 hours in 2G and 4 hours in 3G. 


Verdict

Nokia N900 has been designed for the mobile freaks who like to have all the internet apps in their phone, Though with its size and weight it might not be the first preference of many. But it comes with superior user interface in the form of Maemo developed by Morzilla along with QWERTY keypad. Internet speed is lightening fast with Flash support to play all kinds of videos.
